A backup generator is still commonly recommended at this tier for extended overcast stretches — solar alone rarely eliminates the need for a backup power source entirely, regardless of system size.

Pre-configured kits bundle the panels, controller, and mounting hardware at a set price, which makes it easier to compare against piecing components together yourself.
DIY vs. Professional Install
Professional installation typically adds a meaningful percentage on top of parts cost, but includes roof penetration sealing, code-compliant wiring, and warranty labor coverage that DIY installs don't carry. Many RVers split the difference: DIY the panel mounting and basic wiring, then pay a mobile RV electrician for the final battery, inverter, and breaker panel connections where mistakes are costlier.
Retail Markup Is Real
Solar components sold through big-box RV and outdoor retailers commonly carry substantially higher markup than the same or equivalent components bought directly from the manufacturer or an authorized online retailer. It's worth comparing prices across at least two sources before committing to a kit, especially for battery banks where the dollar difference compounds quickly.
